Actress Vickilyn Reynolds shares the life story of Soror Hattie McDaniel in a play titled "Hattie...What I Need You to Know". Soror McDaniel was the first African-American to win an Academy Award for her role in Gone With the Wind. She won the Oscar for best supporting actress as Mammy. Receiving much criticism for the type of role she played, she wittily responded, "I'd rather play a maid and make $700 a week than be a maid and make $7."
“Hattie {hellip} What I Need You to Know” continues through Oct. 4 at the National Black Theater, 2031-33 Fifth Avenue, at 125th Street, Harlem; (212) 352-3101, theatermania.com.
