The Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Alpha Eta Sigma Chapter Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2008 at The Philadelphia Foundation; honoring and remember the life, leadership, and legacy of the founders of the chapter.
The Alpha Eta Sigma chapter was founded on March 28, 1941. Like the National Sorority of Sigma Gamma Rho it was founded by young women educators. The founding members were Edna Browne, Pearl Howell, Helen Nottage, Erslia Hawkins, Edith Armond, and Geraldine Burris.
The idealism of the sorority is "Greater Service will lead to Greater Progress." The aim of Sigma Gamma Rho is to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadersihp development, and the education of youth are the hallmarks of the organization's programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho adresses concerns that impact society educationally, civically, and economically.
In 2003, Alpha Eta Sigma Chapter lost a longtime sorority member, Parthenia Jackson. Shortly after her passing, the chapter began a discussion around establishing a scholarship in honor of the founding members. Soror Shirley M. Dennis, an honorary member of the sorority, proposed an endowed scholarship and offered a challenge grant.
The sorority accepted the donation and steps were taken to establish an endowed scholarship with The Philadelphia Foundation. On February 28, 2008, the fund was established with Soror Sylvia Nichols as the spokesperson and donor, along with Sorors Nan Rhone and Shirley Dennis as members of the scholarship committee.
