African Crowns Adorn The Heads of Beacon Center Students

The project took place on Thursday Dec. 11 at the Huey School Beacon Center. It was attended by Sorors Coates, Robinson, Wright and Jordan-Cox. Several volunteers also attended.  We spent approximately 2 hours reading to the children in the afterschool program and lead a craft session where the children made African crowns and headdresses similiar to the ones in the book we read (Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters). We used stickers, crayons, markers, construction paper and creativity! The 25 children (from K to 2nd grades) that we interacted with were very well-behaved, excited and did a great job engaging in all planned activites. Our curriculum was well-received by the Beacon Center staff, who welcomed the break they got from the children. We look forward to working with them in February, just in time for Black History Month!
