Since 1979, the Alpha Eta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc has hosted an annual public luncheon commemorating the life and achievements of George Washington Carver, called the Peanut Luncheon. George Washington Carver was an African American scientist, botanist, educator, and inventor whose research studies and teaching revolutionized agriculture in the Southern United States.
The Peanut Luncheon, while recognizing George Washington’s Carver many accomplishments, also seeks to raise funds through ticket sales for scholarships distributed to local high school students. Scholarships are awarded to males and/or females who have demonstrated academic excellence, financial need, and who will be attending college in the fall. The Peanut Luncheon also honors some local unsung heroes and heroines who are breaking barriers in the areas of business, education, community service, religion, and politics. This year’s honorees are:
Robery Bogey, President/CEO of the Philadelphia Tribune
Rev. Cathy Johnson, Triumph Baptist Church
Rep. Kenyatta Johnson, State Representative
Sen. Shirley M. Kitchen, State Senator
Bis. Ernest c. Morris, Mt. Airy C.O.G.I.C.
Sylvia Nichols, Alpha Eta Sigma Chapter Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
Entertainment & Vendors will be on site.
